Vastu Tips for House – By Dr. Anand Bhardwaj (Blog 4)

This blog will share some simple tips of Vastu for house which can be implemented easily but before we share these tips we will explain a bit about how to use a compass. You can use a needle compass or a digital compass on your phone but a needle compass is better as it gives the actual direction of the Magnetic North.

The best way to mark a house or a plot for directions is by standing at the center of the house or plot and holding the compass parallel to the ground. Note the directions of all the major things like entrance, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, puja place etc. This exercise of identifying the directions of each thing is extremely important to ensure maximum benefits of Vastu.

Here are some really simple Vastu tips for house:

Vastu Do’s

  • While cooking face East
  • Keep maximum windows in East & North directions, avoid South & West direction windows and doors to protect against excessive ultraviolet rays, heat & dust etc
  • Doors should open inside the room and not outside
  • Always use beds with 4 legs and avoid box-shaped beds
  • Keep the central section of the house clutter free.
  • A drawing room is best placed in the North West direction because North-West direction is ruled by the air element which ensures guests and visitors do not stay long at your home.
  • Mix Vastu Salt in the water for daily floor mopping and keep negativity away.

Vastu Don’ts

  • Never collect scrap, waste material, empty bottles, tins, old pens, cracked utensils, mirrors, glasses, old brooms, pitchers, old car parts, Tyre, old wood upon roof, broken furniture etc.
  • Never fix a mirror on south and west wall if possible, however it can be installed in these directions for handling specific problems under the guidance of a Vastu expert
  • Big trees should not be grown in north or east. They can be grown in south or west side of the house. However Tulsi plant is very auspicious in North or East side of the house
  • Never build a Toilet in any extreme corner of South-West
  • Avoid having Lord Ganesha’s idol on the entrance. Avoid idols and pictures of Lord Ganesha and Lakshmiji in standing pose
  • Never let your taps leak
  • Never put the poster of a weeping child, war scene, obscene scenes, angry person, pigeon, crow, owl or eagle as these images are inauspicious
  • Never gift shoes, knife, medicines, soaps, blades or things which are concerned with your personal hygiene.

all these tips are useful but i want to ask one question that i am living in a flat and one window of one room open in south direction and the windows of other rooms open to west. i have main entrance door opens to east. not a single window in east or north direction then what can i do?

    1. Hi Pradnya,

Dr. Bhardwaj has given following remedy for windows on the West and South walls: You can stick black film on the glass. This black film is easily available with any car accessory shop. You must also put heavy curtain on your window during afternoon hours (11 PM to 4 PM). These remedies will negate the harmful impact of wrongly placed windows.

You have stated not to have Lord Ganesh photo at the entrance.but all advise us for a vastu Ganesh or Ganesh ji statue or photo at entrance

    1. (On behalf of Dr.Bhardwaj)

      Hi Kiran,

The reason why having lord Ganesha idol at the entrance is wrong because of the story where Maa Parvati asked lord Ganesha to guard the door while she is having a shower. Lord Shiva meanwhile arrived at the same time and the wanted to enter. Lord Ganesha did not let him in and the whole episode ended tragically where lord Ganesha lost his head. This is the reason why it is advised not have lord Ganesha at the entrance of the home as it has a very negative connotation.

What is the remedy if the toilet is in south west? Please tell as we can not change it.

    1. (On behalf of Dr. Bhardwaj)

      Hi Usha,

A toilet placed in the South West corner of the house is considered inauspicious. You can do following remedies to overcome the negativity such toilet propogates:

      1. You can isolate the complete South zone of your house by fixing a copper wire underneath the floor. This copper wire should run from one end to another end and it should completely cut the South corner of the plot. Ideal way to do this is by cutting the floor in a straight line from one wall to the opposite wall such that the South section is isolated. Place a copper wire in that freshly cut gap in the floor from one wall to another and cover the same with cement or any other filling material.
      2. You can establish some Pyramids under a few tiles within the toilet. A Vastu expert will be required to analyze the right places where pyramids should be fixed.
      3. You can do this simple remedy in case you are unable to do above to remedies. You can place Sea Salt in your toilet and you should replace it in every 15 days with fresh Sea Salt.
      4. In case you have more number of toilets then you can remove the commode and discontinue to use the space for toilet instead start using it for store room.

Wt is d remedy for a house which has 5 corner s with is not good according to vastu…plz help..

  14. We r planning to alter our old village house. Shall we place ladder in dinning hall, almost middle of the house. Or where to place ladder. Our house is faces to South. Toilet is outside the house towards east. And planning to construct Bathroom in South West corner aside a toilet, and attach to existing house. Can we do so….

    1. (On Behalf of Dr. Bhardwaj)
      Hi Nalina,

As a usual Vastu practice, stairs are never fixed in the central part of the building. Central part should always be kept free from any construction or clutter. Having a toilet or a bathroom in the South-West is also not considered auspicious as per Vastu. House facing South is not inauspicious if right Vastu compliance is done. It is extremely difficult to advise you only on the basis of what you have written. Before any advice it is important the place is either visited physically or a layout plan is seen by the expert to exactly figure out positives and negatives of the place.

  24. Found exactly what I was looking for.

  25. Can somewhere be found a hypothetical floor-plan of an apartment or a house to see how it would look like if all Vastu principles had been applied, so that I can take it as a reference and compare with real-world floos-plans in order to see how much they rely on Vastu guidelines?

    1. Hi Zlatko,

We haven’t yet worked on devising a floor plan that incorporates as many rules of Vastu as possible. We take your concern as a feedback and our team will try to come up with some floor plans in times to come.
