The meaning of Spirituality (Adhyatma in Hindi) differ from person to person so it is difficult to really explain how should one begin the journey. A few of the widely accepted interpretations of the term spirituality are “Connecting with God or Supreme Being”, “Searching for Soul”, “Practicing ones religious beliefs” and there are many other such interpretations. We will largely use the understanding of spirituality as connecting with God or Supreme Being along with Searching for Soul to explain the spiritual journey and we may use a few illustrations from Hindu Vedic belief to explain it further.
Contrary to commonly held belief that spirituality begins by knowing and searching for God it actually begins by realization of self. Most of us are well familiar with the physical aspect of knowing the self but realization of self goes deeper in its meaning. Awareness of physical self largely relates to the appearance of the outer body which is not the complete realization of self. Deep beneath the physical body lies the inner self which is made up of mind and an energy mechanism working within. By bringing our awareness to this inner self we start bringing the inner self to our consciousness and we begin to realize the life.
The energy within, acts like a fuel which drives our physical and mental body. This energy as per Vedas is called Soul. Even though this energy is probably the closest energy we experience in our day to day life but not much has been taught to us about it in our science classes. We all understand that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed but it can be transformed from one form to another form similarly our soul can neither be created and nor be destroyed, it can just be transformed.
As per Shrimad Bhagvad Gita only physical body dies but soul lives forever and soul takes another body after the death of the previous one. Here it is important to first understand where this energy comes from. If you closely look at the energies on Earth you will realize that Earth does not have any energy of its own. Every form of the energy on earth can trace its root back to the Sun and whatever we eat to fuel ourselves also trace its root back to the Sun. Hindu tradition lay a special emphasis on worshiping the Sun. Greatest Hindu Mantra “The Gayatri Mantra” is in reverence to the Sun for seeking the blessing of knowledge through its brilliance. According to Vedic Astrology Sun represents the soul while Moon represents mind. Hindu tradition even emphasize on revering the departed souls through Pitra Puja. Hindu Vedic texts are clear that whoever departs either take up another form of being or gets liberated (Moksha). Pitra Puja is done to revere the departed ancestors and seek their blessings. The subject of Liberation or Moksha will be touched upon later.
Coming back to where we started: How to begin a spiritual journey? Spiritual journey should begin by realization of soul and as previously explained soul is just a form of energy that works in the background of every living being, this energy can be realized by each one of us. Within the domain of spirituality, energies are classified as either Positive or Negative.
